Abberton Reservoir in Essex

The Abberton Reservoir visitor centre, just south of Layer de la Haye, is 5 miles south west of Colchester on the B1026 (the Colchester/ Maldon Road). Its 15 sided building opened in early 2012 at a cost of £150 million.

Visitors to the reservoir can expect to find a bird watchers paradise of large areas of rough grassland with shallow muddy margins.  This is a first class site for find many species including skylarks, and even the short eared owl.  Accessible higher ground affords stunning panoramas across the reservoir of the surrounding countryside and villages.  There are three excellent hides - two overlooking the reservoir, and one deep in the woodland. The Visitor Centre itself has a great viewing platform, toilet facilities, and a shop, selling everything from binoculars and wildlife books, through to tea and ice creams.
